Why We Love the Deadlift (and Why You Should Too) (Copy)
Let’s talk about one of our absolute favorite lifts in the gym—the deadlift. If you’ve trained with us in personal sessions or hit the floor with our group classes, you already know we’re big fans of this movement. But it’s not just because it looks cool or moves big weight (though we do love that too). The deadlift is one of the most powerful tools in your training toolbox—for building strength, resilience, and even rehabbing your body.
Deadlifts: More Than Just Picking Stuff Up
At first glance, the deadlift is simple: pick a weight up off the floor, set it down. But that simplicity? It’s what makes it such a versatile, foundational movement. Whether you're a seasoned powerlifter chasing PRs at meets or someone getting back on your feet after a back issue, the deadlift has a place in your training.
Yes, even if you've been told you "shouldn't deadlift." We hear it all the time: “My doctor/PT/chiropractor told me deadlifts are bad for my back.” But here's the truth—when done correctly, the deadlift strengthens your back. Do they tell you not to pick up your kids ever again? The deadlift can teach your body how to hinge, how to brace, and how to handle the stresses that life throws at you, both in and out of the gym.
We use deadlifts not just for strength, but for prehab and rehab. Recurring back issues? Controlled, coached deadlifts can actually help. There are many variations—trap bar, sumo, DB, Romanian, Zercher stiff-leg, kettlebell, B stance, Crossbody, Hamstring March, Reverse Hack…. the list goes on—so we find the version that works for you. The goal is not just to lift heavy but to move well.
The Deadlift = Life Training
Here’s the thing: life doesn’t always let you avoid picking stuff up. Groceries, kids, suitcases, random things you drop. Deadlifting teaches your body how to handle that load safely and also how you DON’T have to always brace and bend like you do i a deadlift. Yes- you can even learn movement variability aside from a deadlift by deadlifting better. By skipping the deadlift, or any hinge movement, you’re missing out on the chance to prepare your body for these real-world challenges that aren’t always the same. It’s not about lifting for the sake of lifting—it’s about adaptation. The deadlift helps you build a body that’s not just strong, but capable in many waysssss.
Learn It Right with Coach Jess
If you’re wondering how to dial in your conventional or sumo deadlift form (the two most common), we’ve got you covered. Coach Jess Kilts put together an awesome video breaking down the deadlift setup and pull from the ground. She walks you through the key points—set-up, key points to get the best pull through leverages, hinge specifics, etc—and helps you feel confident in your lift, whether you're new or just need a tune-up. Definitely give it a watch, especially if you want to see how we coach the lift step-by-step.
